John 16: 7-11, “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged."
Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the Helper. How does He help? He convicts us concerning sin.
When one falls under conviction because of sin, it is a result of the Holy Spirit awakening one to the sense of guilt, a sense of feeling dirty, and a feeling of being condemned because of sin and unbelief. The process of coming to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is that the Holy Spirit has awakened us to the fact that we are sinners and we need the Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Following Jesus in obedience due to conviction lead us to peace in knowing Him.
Conviction assures the new believer of being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. I heard an illustration concerning this years ago,
The story was there was a young boy who lived in a non-Christian home, and he was raised listening to his dad use profanity. The young boy was invited to a church service and on that day he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He went home and as he was walking up to the house, his dad was working on a car and was upset and using a lot of profanity. The boy began to smile and the dad looked at the boy and asked him why did he have a smile on his face… The boy replied, “Dad tonight I prayed and received Christ as my Lord and Savior, and for the first time in my life, your profanity sounds dirty to me.” The Holy Spirit awakens our souls, opens our spiritual ears and eyes.
Conviction by the Holy Spirit helps our maturing as a Christian. He will convict us as we follow Christ.
I give praise to an awesome God for sending His Son to be my Savior and Lord, and for sending me His Spirit to convict me.
We grow in Him by being broken over our sins and confessing them and repenting from them.
Psalm 40:2-3, He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the LORD.
The Holy Spirit brings a conviction that pulls up.
